10/12/2000A Special Court sentences former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and his Home Minister Buta Singh to undergo three years rigorous imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 2 lakhs each in the 'JMM MPs' bribery case'.
4/2/1991Asom Gana Parishad splits.
11/8/1661Guru Har Rai passed away. Second son Har Kishan became the eighth Sikh Guru age of 5 years 4 Months. He passed away at the age of 7 years 9 Months.
8/9/1942The Congress at its Bombay session passed the famous Quit India resolution, calling for mass struggle on non-violent lines on the widest possible scale, under the leadership of Gandhiji. He stressed that ""We shall either free India or die in the attempt; We shall not live to see the perpetuation of our slavery""; popularly known as ""Do or Die"". But before the Congress could start the movement, the government arrested all the major leaders and the Congress was declared illegal. Spontaneous popular revolts broke out with the battle cry of 'British Quit India'.

12/10/1902Nijalingappa Siddavanahalli, president of Indian National Congress and politician, was born at Haluvagalu (Bellary).
2/17/1931Viceroy of India Lord Irvin accepted Mahatma Gandhi as leader of people and invited him at Vicregal Lodge (now known at Rashtrapati Bhavan). After the event, Winston Churchill, who later became Prime Minister of Britain, referred Gandhiji as ""the Half-Naked Fakir of India"".
