Ages four and five are extremely formative years for children and their exposure to something like karate is a serous undertaking. Learning to punch, block and kick while fun in itself, it is only part of a greater program of learning about achieving step by step goals in areas such as focus, how to treat others, respect for family, teachers and others. Students who are shy, timed or withdrawn learn to develop through physical skills a sense of self confidence that is so important in dealing with their peers. Their posture changes slowly to more assertive and upright, their ability to listen to others increases, and their skill at handling confrontations becomes better. We put the child in a group setting where they learn the value of mutual cooperation while also having fun meeting their own fantasies about being a super athlete or warrior. They quickly learn this is a safe place where no one gets punched or kicked and being kind and considerate of others is valuable. At about age six, these same youngsters take a great leap forward in concrete thinking and are able to graduate into a more demanding karate program, with more complex moves and athleticism.
